Subramanyan studied at the Presidency College, Madras in 1942-43, after which he studied at the Kala Bhavan Santiniketan in 1944-48, followed by a stint in London at the Slade School of Art in 1955-56. As a professor and dean of painting he has taught at the faculty of Fine Arts in Baroda in 1966-80. His long association with Kala Bhavan Santiniketan has spanned several years first as visiting fellow in 1977-78, and then as a professor of painting in 1980-89. He has held in several solo shows all over the world including the Sao Paolo Biennale in 1961 & 1979 Brazil, the Tokyo Biennale Japan in 1964, the Indian art exhibition in Belgium in 1966, and at the Tate Gallery in 1982. The Government of India has honored several awards to him including the Padma Shri. KG Subramanyan has participated in Resonance, a group show featuring works by masters with Art Musings in 2005 and 2006 and solo show In The Honeycomb of Stories, 2018.
