Entombed in silence in his early years as a result of his hearing being impaired, Gujral drew inspiration from Urdu literature, and in 1939 joined the Mayo School of Art in Lahore. In 1944 he joined the JJ School of Art in Bombay. Gujral served as an apprentice of Mexican Masters Diego Riviera and David Alfaro Siqueiros in the early fifties. His paintings and sculptures have a distinct vocabulary. His bronze sculptures have a fluid energy. This sense of movement, combined with the inherent strength of the material that the sculptor works in, gives the works a sinuous and undulating form. The use of patina and colour in the works create a subtle and aesthetic synergy. Gujral has had shown all around the world and has won numerous national and international awards. The Belgian Government honoured Gujral with the Order of the Crown for designing the Belgian Embassy. He is three times National Award Winner. Nine books of his works have been published, including his biography ‘A Brush with Life’. He has been honoured with the Padma Vibhushan in 1999.
