Nikhil Chaganlal is a self-taught artist who, over the years, has developed a unique technique of painting on Masonite. He uses acrylic combined with oil paints and chemical sealants used in the fishing boats industry. He almost always paints at night by candlelight, giving his work a gentle luminosity. The process is demanding and time-intensive – the works are multi-layered, with each layer needing to dry in the sunlight for a day before the artist can work on it again. His works reflect his journey into an inward retreat of a disturbed childhood. His body of work builds into a painterly autobiography, suggesting the presence of people from his past as well as gesturing towards a restless sexuality and an evolving spirituality. Chaganlal has held several solo exhibitions in India & abroad. His works have been placed in many important private collections. His previous exhibitions with Art Musings include 50 Revolutions around the Sun, 2011, coinciding with the artist’s 50th birthday and Intimate Vistas of the Interior, 2010. The artist lives and works in Goa.
