S H Raza, one of the original founders of the Progressive Artist’s Group, was one of the most prominent artists in India. He shaped the face of Modernism in India with his unique vision and style. He was conferred the Padma Shree Award in 1981, Padma Bhushan Award in 2007 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2013. Raza’s work has formalism as well as the mystic aspects of Hindu philosophy. Raza’s style evolved over the years -he began with expressionist landscapes. It was in the late 70s that his focus turned to pure geometrical forms. His images are improvisations on an essential theme: that of the mapping out of a metaphorical space in the mind. The circle or ‘Bindu’ has become more of an icon, sacred in its symbolism, and placing his work in an Indian context. Raza had several important exhibitions all over the world. He participated in the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1958, the Biennale de Menton, in France in 1966, 1968 and in 1978, and Contemporary Indian Painting, at the Royal Academy in London, in 1982. Solo exhibitions with Art Musings include Kshitij, 2018; Nirantar, 2016; Aarambh @ 93, 2015; Vistaar, 2013; and Japa, 2004. Art Musings has also released several books on the artist. Group Exhibitions with Art Musings include Doorways, 2020; India Art Fair; 2016, ’14, ’13, ’12, ’11; Resonance, 2005; Master Strokes, 2003; Annual Show, 2001; Opening Show, 2019. To commemorate the artist’s centenary year, in 2022, Art Musings collaborated with the prestigious CSMVS museum, the JNAF and the Raza Foundation to present Zamin: Homelands.
